Camp Laney was founded in 1959 by former Woodlawn and Alabama coach Malcolm Laney. Coach and his wife Louise directed the camp through fifteen successful seasons. Coach Laney was inducted into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame in 1984.

Coach Laney's successor, Rob Hammond, has been spending his summers at Camp Laney since 1961. During these summers Rob was a camper, junior counselor, and senior counselor. He became director in 1974. Rob graduated from Vanderbilt University in 1971, and taught for five years at Darlington Lower School in Rome, Georgia.
His becoming director of Camp Laney is the fulfillment of a longtime ambition, and he will strive to provide your son with the same meaningful camping experience Coach Laney provided for him.
Rob, his wife San, and their two sons, Jordan and Bo, live in Rome, Georgia during the off season.

The staff is the most important aspect of any camp.  Our senior staff members must have a completed year of college.  These young men serve as models for our campers.  We are looking for young men of outstanding character who are mature, have a natural liking and ability to get along with boys, and be able to teach a skill.  The entire staff completes a week of orientation prior to the first session.  All staff members are Red Cross certified in First Aid and C.P.R.  Dr. Jerry Jennings, educational psychologist from Berry College, Rome, Georgia, is our staff trainer.  He is joined by Dr. Chris Thurber, a school psychologist at Phillips Exeter Academy.  Chris also works at Camp Belknap in New Hampshire during the summer and is the author of The Summer Camp Handbook.  Chris is a regular presenter for the American Camping Association.
Camp Laney Staff
Laney staff members receive specialized training in many of the camp activities.  Lifeguards are certified by the American Red Cross.  Mike King of the Berry College Outdoor Leadership Program conducts the class.  Archery staff members receive certification from the National Archery Association, and riflery counselors receive certification under the Civilian Marksmanship Program.  Ropes course counselors are trained by Rob Piper of the Adventure Guild.
