The beginning of 2010 brought freezing temperatures and a lot of snowy weather to Lookout Mountain and Mentone. The temperature has routinely dropped into single digits for the past few weeks. It has stayed so cold that the Little River has frozen over. None of us has had the confidence to do any ice skating on the river, but we've almost got Whitney convinced.
We thought everyone would enjoy some pictures of the Laney Waterfront frozen over!

Just like all over the Southeast, Camp Laney has been getting a lot of rain. The river rose up past the benches, more than half way up the life-jacket hut, and almost half way up to the Morning Watch benches. The river was flowing as fast as we've seen it. Luckily, we didn't lose the dock and all our canoes, kayaks, and hydro-bikes are safe as well. We thought everyone would like to see what the Little River looked like the past couple days.

It finally feels like the camp season has begun. We are in the middle of our Staff Orientation. Two weeks ago, we had our lifeguards come and get trained by Mike King of the American Red Cross and Berry College. We also held our Archery, Riflery, and Ropes Course trainings.
Dr. Chris Thurber is one of our Staff Trainers. Chris is the author of The Summer Camp Handbook, which you can find online for free at www.summercamphandbook.com.
The staff has been learning about homesickness prevention and treatment, how to deal with bullying, and many other topics.
The staff has also been certified in American Red Cross First Aid and CPR. We almost have camp ready to go and are looking forward to opening day! |

The weather is starting to warm up and we can't believe camp is less than 2 months away!
Whitney and Luke have finished up traveling for interviews for potential staff members - the 2011 staff is complete! Over 20 staff from last summer will be returning this year for the summer of 2011.
Applications have been rolling in and the sessions are really starting to fill up, so make sure to register soon if you haven't.
First time parents and campers, be on the lookout for a mailer soon that will include a Sneak Preview for this summer, along with a DVD entitled "Secret Ingredients for Summer Camp Success" by one of our own staff trainers, Chris Thurber.
We hope everyone is excited for another fantastic summer at Laney. We look forward to seeing everyone soon.

As you can see, we have completely redesigned our website. We hope that everyone finds it more user friendly. We have also added some new features, such as:
- Laney News: Keep up with what's going on at Camp Laney throughout the year. We will update this section frequently with important information about enrollment, payment dates, and general goings-on at Camp.
- 2009 Calendars and Activity Schedules: This section is under the Parent Resources tab. It contains printable session calendars with exact dates and important events for each specific two week session. There are also daily activity schedules for each individual cabin. Click on your son's cabin, and you'll be able to see what he will be doing all day long. You can print these out and keep them on your refrigerator.
- Parent Resources: Here you can find a list of books and websites that can be helpful preparing you and your son for his time at camp.
- Online Staff Application: The link to the online staff application can be found on the bottom of the Employment Page and also on the Applications & Forms Page. The online version of the staff application will make it much easier and more efficient for our prospective staff members.
We hope you enjoy the new website and would love to hear any feedback that you may have.
